I have worked with wood, both vocationally and avocationally, most of my life. My father was a carpenter and cabinet maker, and I gained an interest in both from him. Shop classes kept me sane during high school. I worked my way through undergraduate and graduate school using my construction and carpentry skills and, in the past 30 years, I have turned my hand to cabinet making and fine woodworking as hobbies -- I was a university professor for thirty five years. Building on the basic hand-tool skills I learned as a boy, I assembled a solid woodworking library and studied it in great detail. Combining this study with years of practice and projects, I have arrived at a point where I can sell almost anything I make in one of several art galleries where my work has been sold. This is gratifying but demanding, too. Between my gallery work, personal commissions, and family projects, I cannot keep up with the demand -- in other words, I am enjoying my retirement from university teaching.
